Morocco opened the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a large ceremony, followed by a victory against Comoros in Rabat’s new Moulay Abdallah stadium, reports Africa News on 22nd December. The ceremony was attended by Crown Prince Moulay Hassan.

Morocco, as the host nation, played the opening game and won relatively comfortably against Comoros with two goals from Brahim Diaz and Ayoub El Kaabi in the second half.

The Atlas Lions are amongst the favourites and are facing significant pressure to win the title after their strong performance at the 2022 World Cup. It would be their first AFCON trophy since 1976.
