At least 12 dead and 10 missing as migrant boat sinks off Tunisia
Three children were among at least 12 Tunisians found dead after a migrant boat capsized off the island of Djerba in the southeast of Tunisia, a judicial official said according to the Arab News via Reuters.
The boat went down at dawn and 29 people were rescued, Medenine court spokesman Fethi Baccouche told AFP, who added that five men and four women were among the dead, and that the cause of the sinking had yet to be ascertained.
More than 1,300 people died or disappeared last year in shipwrecks off Tunisia, according to the FTDES rights group, while the International Organization for Migration has stated that more than 30,309 migrants have died in the Mediterranean Sea over the past 10 years, including more than 3,000 last year alone.
