Spanish police said on October 24th that they had broken up a network suspected of smuggling at least 70 Syrian and Algerian migrants to Spain, according to the Arab News via AFP.

The smuggling ring was paid up to €10,000 by each migrant for trips from Algeria to Spain, before travelling elsewhere in Europe, the Spanish police, who made three arrests, said in a statement.

The conditions on the boats posed a “serious risk” to the migrants’ lives, and the organisers used violent means against those who didn’t pay on time, while the migrants suffered “dire” living conditions in the Madrid and Toledo regions before leaving, notably to German, police said.
