Macron names ally Bayrou as PM
French president Emmanuel Macron named Francois Bayrou as his fourth prime minister of 2024 on December 13th, according to Reuters.
The priority for close Macron ally Bayrou will be passing a special law to roll over 2024’s budget, with a more vicious battle over the 2025 legislation looming early next year. Pushback from parliament over the 2025 bill led to the fall of ex-PM Michel Barnier’s government.
The new PM, 73, is expected to put forward his list of ministers in the coming days, but is likely to face the same roadblocks as Barnier in pushing legislation through a hung parliament comprising three warring blocs.
