Sudan: Nearly 300,000 pregnant women displaced new data shows
New data shows around 2.7 million women of reproductive age are displaced in Sudan, with over 270,000 pregnant, as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis grows ever bleaker.
According to AP via AfricaNews on December 18th the figures, which were released by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), show humanitarian catastrophe unleashed by the brutal civil war.
80 percent of health facilities in Sudan are either closed or barely functioning, with the lack of natal services leaving women to die from childbirth-related complications.
Sabreen Abdulrahman, a displaced mother who is nine-months pregnant with her fourth child, said: “After I give birth, I worry about the cold weather and not having a proper place to put my baby. We don’t have a home, we sleep outside, on the floor.”
According to the UN, nearly 1.5 million people across Sudan are either facing famine or at risk of famine, including over 35,000 pregnant women.
