France’s former President Nicolas Sarkozy will stand trial on January 6th over the alleged illegal financing of his 2007 election campaign by Libyan government of Moammar Gadhafi.

According to AP, the “Libyan case” is the most shocking of several scandals involving Sarkozy, who faces charges of passive corruption, illegal campaign financing, concealment of embezzlement of public funds and criminal association, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Sarkozy, 69, has denied any wrongdoing, saying: “There is no Libyan financing of the campaign. We want to believe the court will have the courage to examine the facts objectively, without being guided by the nebulous theory that poisoned the investigation.”
