EU Parliament President, Roberta Metsola, visited Egypt to hold talks with senior government officials on strengthening the ties between the two.

Africa News reported on January 9th that Metsola met with the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the Senate, discussing the EU’s commitment to deepening the partnership amid escalating conflict in the region.

The high-level talks in Cairo focused on the EU’s strategic interest in Egypt as both a critical player in the region’s stability and as their role as the first line of defence against illegal migration into Europe. In exchange, Egypt is expected to receive large sums of macro-financial assistance.

The assistance from the EU would be of great benefit to Cairo who incurred an “estimated loss of seven billion dollars in Suez Canal revenues in 2024 as a result of Houthi attacks on commercial ships in Bab al-Mandab, resulting from the ongoing war in Gaza”, according to the SIS.

Egyptian President Sisi also reviewed Egypt’s efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing the need for a two-state solution, believed to be the “only solution” by the Egyptian government, according to the SIS.

The talks follow the conference in Cairo between the leaders of Egypt, Cyprus and Greece which also called for regional stability following the fall of the Assad regime in Syria.
