Former prison mate of jailed Egyptian-Brit to go on hunger strike
An Australian journalist who was once jailed for 400 days in Egypt is staging a hunger strike in London to press Britain to try and get jailed Egyptian-British dissident Alaa Abd el-Fattah released, Reuters reported on January 20th.
Software developer and blogger Abd el-Fattah who rose to prominence as an activist in the 2011 Arab Spring was jailed for five years in Egypt over a post on social media, after number of previous spells in prison, including before and after the uprising.
Greste, who was in a prison cell next to Abd el-Fattah back in 2023, joined el-Fattah’s mother on January 20th to protest outside Downing Street. His mother is already on hunger strike and Greste says he has plans to stage a 21-day strike.
