Mohamed Dihani: Moroccan state weaponizes defamation
Former political prisoner of Morocco and Sahrawi human rights defender, Mohamed Dihani, has shared how the Moroccan state uses defamation as a tool of repression.
According to Mohamed Dihani on Italian news site, Il Manifesto, on January 21st, “defamation in the press has become a daily issue in Morocco” especially on the issue of Western Sahara.
Smear campaigns often end in severe sentences, as in the case of the “Gdeim Izik” prisoners, 19 Sahrawi activists and journalists who have been serving sentences of up to life in prison since 2010 for participating in a 38-day peaceful protest.
