Libya looks to Turkey for renewable energy expertise
Turkey is emerging as a key partner in Libya’s aspirations for renewable energy sources, as electricity demand outstrips the North African county’s fossil fuels.
According to Middle East Monitor on January 27th, Abdusselam Elansari, head of the Renewable Energy Authority of Libya, said: “We are cooperating with different Turkish companies in terms of electricity, power and renewable energy. Indeed, as a renewable energy strategy that we have launched, we plan to cooperate with different companies from different countries. We have a priority for the Turkish companies.”
With a growing population of around 7 million, Libya has exceeded the capacity of its oil and gas-powered plants and plans to produce 4 gigawatts of capacity from renewables by 2035, accounting for 20 per cent of the country’s total energy production.
