Italy: Giorgia Meloni under investigation for Libya scandal
Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni has been placed under judicial investigation after her government released a Libyan prison officer with an International Criminal Court arrest warrant.
According to Al-Jazeera on January 29th, Meloni said Rome’s chief prosecutor, Francesco Lo Voi, has placed her under investigation for allegedly aiding and abetting a crime, and misuse of public funds.
Giorgia Meloni condemned the investigation, saying she “will not be blackmailed” and “will not be intimidated over an investigation”, after her government flew Osama Elmasry Njeem, who is wanted by the ICC for alleged crimes against humanity, including murder, torture and rape, back to Libya.
