On January 27th The National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists warned of the deterioration of the health of jailed journalists Mohamed Boughalleb and Shaza El-Haj Mubarak.

According to Middle East Monitor this deterioration is so severe it is currently putting the lives of the journalists at risk.

The union stated: “They [the journalists] require urgent and multiple medical interventions in medical institutions that guarantee the effectiveness of treatment.”

Boughalleb has a diagnosis of diabetes, a point placing him at even higher risk when the condition is not properly managed. He was sentenced in June 2024 to eight months in prison for “defaming a public official.”

Mubarak was arrested in July 2023 on charges associated with the “InstaLingo” case (InstaLingo is a content production and digital communications company).

Arrests in this case date back to October 2021, when Tunisian authorities arrested InstaLingo employees, interrogating journalists, freelancers, bloggers, and politicians on a variety of charges including “committing a heinous act against the head of state” and “conspiring against internal state security.”

The Union reiterated its calls to the state and courts “to stop all unconstitutional prosecutions outside the framework of the law regulating the press sector of all journalists and media professionals referred to court for journalistic and media content.”

Three other journalists are currently being held in Tunisian prisons. On 11 May 2024, lawyer and television commentator Sonia Dahmani was arrested after she made televised critical remarks against the government and the general political situation in Tunisia.
