Turkey is set to open a consulate in the rival Libyan administration of Benghazi as Erdogan looks to play the role of arbiter in the bitterly divided country.

According to Atalayar on 11 February, Turkish and Libyan ministers met to improve diplomatic and economic relations, as well as to formalise the opening of a new Turkish consulate in the city of Benghazi.

While Turkey has traditionally supported the UN recognised government of Tripoli, even militarily, last year saw some remarkable diplomatic developments, as the Turkish defence minister and the son of Benghazi leader Khalifa Haftar, who has long pursued an anti-Turkish agenda, met according to Daily Sahah.
