Senegal introduces English lessons in nursery and primary schools

Senegal, which currently uses French in its public schools, has begun testing a new program of teaching English to nursery and primary pupils, in an attempt to better connect with the wider world, according to RFI on February 16th.

English was until recently only taught in public high schools and universities, although it had sometimes been taught from nursery school onwards within the private sector.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, elected last March, is attempting to reshape Senegal’s relationship with its former colonial power, France,  from whom it proclaimed independence in 1960.
