EU imposes new sanctions on Russia amid peace talks

The European Union has agreed to place new sanctions on Russia in a move that risks jeopardising the Ukrainian peace process.

According to an article by Euronews, the new sanctions-primarily targeting Russian aluminium exports, which previously accounted for around “6%” of  EU aluminium imports, were agreed upon by EU representatives on February 19.

The decision is seen as a largely symbolic gesture, as the  sanctions coincide with the three year anniversary of the war in Ukraine. However, they may also serve as bargaining chips in future  negotiations between the EU and Russia regarding peace talks.  

Despite claims by multiple U.S diplomats, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio that “no one is being sidelined” the EU has yet to be formally invited to the current U.S-Russia negotiations on Ukraine.

Many  EU politicians and diplomats fear that without their input at the negotiating table, any deal reached  between the U.S and Russia could seriously jeopardize both Ukraine’s security and that of the EU. 

Nevertheless, while negotiations continue, the EU appears determined to maintain its hard-line stance on Russia in regards to sanctions.  

In a official statement by Ursa Von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, reaffirmed the EU’s position, stating “We are committed to keep up the pressure on the Kremlin”  

In addition to targeting aluminium exports, the new sanctions are aimed at Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”-a network of vessels allegedly used to evade a Western sanctions and conduct sabotage activities.
