Morocco: Local business brushed aside for tourism industry

Local businesses in Morocco are being outcompeted by new hotels and development projects ushered in by the Government’s aggressive tourism policies.
According to Middle East Eye on 25 February, a bazaar in the Rabat satellite town of Sale that was once a thriving market, overflowing with goods produced by local families, has now made way for a building site, awaiting modern hotels to replace the traditional shops.
An elderly man in a remaining tent, with one of his last tajine pots said: “Sorry, I don’t wish to talk about it. It upsets me too much.”
