Syrians protest as Israel enforces demilitarised southern zones

Syrians in the southern regions are protesting against Israel’s recent military expansions and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s order to prevent Syrian military forces from moving south of Damascus, as reported by Middle East Eye via Reuters on February 24th.
This development follows Netanyahu’s speech on February 23rd, where he made it clear that he would not permit the movement of the Syrian army and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) forces into this strategically sensitive area.
During his address, Netanyahu was firm: “Take note: We will not allow HTS forces or the new Syrian army to enter the area south of Damascus.” He emphasised the ongoing tension between Israel and the new Syrian leadership and demanded the complete demilitarisation of the southern regions of Quneitra, Daraa, and Sweida. This has sparked significant outrage, seen as an Israeli attempt to undermine Syrian sovereignty.
Many view Netanyahu’s stance as a move to strengthen Israel’s control with U.S. backing. Robin Yassin-Kassab, a noted expert on the Syrian conflict, criticised this approach, accusing Netanyahu of attempting to divide Syria and manipulate regional dynamics for Israel’s advantage. Yassin-Kassab argued that these tactics aim to take advantage of the geopolitical complexity, particularly after the significant shifts in Syria post-Bashar al-Assad.
As the protests persist, Syrians across the affected provinces express their rejection of any demilitarisation that compromises their national integrity. With banners and chants like “Netanyahu, you pig, Syria is not for division,” and “Syria is free, Israel get out!” the protesters convey a strong message of unity and resistance against foreign meddling. These demonstrations underscore the deep resentment towards Israeli policies and the enduring spirit among Syrians to protect their land and sovereignty from external forces.
