France: Foreign Minister expands sanctions against Algeria

Diplomatic relations between France and Algeria are at an all-time low amid a flurry of new sanctions.
According to The Pinnacle Gazette, the sanctions- announced on February 25 by Jean-Noel Barrot, France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs,- target certain Algerian politicians and diplomats.
These measures are primarily intended to restrict the movement of these individuals, effectively limiting their actives and harming Algeria’s diplomatic interests
France states that the sanctions are a direct response to Algeria’s refusal to accept the return of certain deportees who originally came to France from Algeria
Many of these individuals are considered potential security threats, with some reportedly linked to the recent Mulhouse attack.
France views their deportation as a matter of national security and appears determined to see the process through.
This dispute is just one of many ongoing tensions between the two countries ,whose relationship remains deeply strained due to historic grievances.
As previously reported by Maghrebi, Algeria fought a bloody war of independence against France in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
The conflict left behind a bitter legacy including the issue of France’s nuclear testing in Algeria – for which Algeria, as recently as February 13, has continued to demand compensation.
Despite France’s hardline stance, Barrot also expressed willingness to lift the sanctions and reconsider France’s approach- if Algeria agrees to cooperate on the return of certain individuals
However, as of now, no offer of compensation or resolution has been proposed between the two nations.
For now, relations remain in limbo, and French-Algerian ties appear set to decline further unless both sides reach an agreement.
