Morocco has won presidency of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

According to the North Africa Post on March 12th, the presidency will be a one-year term, chaired by Morocco’s industrial minister Ryad Mezzour.

Algeria tried unsuccessfully to block Morocco’s presidency by calling for a renewal of the mandate of Zimbabwe’s chair, Morocco’s predecessor.

However, Morocco’s bid was supported by Zimbabwe itself, disrupting Algeria’s plan.

The commission holds the important role of promoting economic and social development across the entirety of Africa. The UN conducts research, providing policy recommendations and ideas to member states on both economic and social issues. They also provide technical support to countries, aiding with statistical analysis, economic planning, and public administration.

As well as this the Economic Commission for Africa helps to strengthen the capacities of African institutions and governments via training and development programs, which aim to promote regional cooperation and integration, thereby improving economic development and growth.

On March 4th, Morocco was appointed as vice- president of the African Water Council (AMCOW) for the 2025-27 term, making the Economic Commission for Africa their second leadership appointment of the month.
