Algeria, Tunisia, Libya advance electrical interconnection project

Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya are working together to create an electrical interconnection project. According to Atalayar, the aim is to prevent summer blackouts where energy demands peak across North Africa.
The electrical interconnection project is backed by the Sonelgaz Group who are establishing a detailed roadmap for the project. Last November, a 24-hour test was conducted and exchanged 400-500 megawatts between countries whilst Libya received its first direct electricity transfer from Algeria (265 megawatts).
With the three nations’ presidents approving future development plans in April 2025, the project looks to be a serious asset for developing interconnected energy in the region.
