South Africa’s fragile unity government faced new turmoil on April 2nd as the Democratic Alliance voted against the national budget, citing concerns over tax increases that would burden the country’s poor majority, as reported by the Associated Press.

The opposition party plans to challenge the budget in court, while the leftist Economic Freedom Fighters celebrated the discord within the government.

Despite the disagreement, a small party, ActionSA, supported the ANC, helping to pass the budget, which includes VAT increases to generate revenue for health and social services.
