Spanish FA President Kiss Controversy
Spain’s victory over England in the World Cup final was overshadowed by Spanish Football Association’s (FA) President, Luis Rubiales’ conduct as he forced a kiss on one of Spain’s players.
The triumphant Spaniards won 1-0 against the Lionesses at the 2023 Women’s World Cup final in Sydney. Following the match Rubiales gave Spanish striker, Jenni Hermoso an unsolicited kiss on the lips.
FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings on August 24 against Luis Rubiales following his inappropriate actions, according to Africa News, August 24.
This prompted a high number of complaints with many of them calling for his resignation. USA ace Megan Rapinoe and prominent politicians were among those outraged at the Spanish FA’s President’s behaviour.
It marks a sad end to a competition which saw record-breaking attendances for women’s football matches as well as underdog stories.

Morocco exceeded expectations by reaching the Round of 16, ultimately losing 4-0 to the French. This is the first time that a team from the Arab or North African region got past the competition’s group stage.
FIFA were late to react to the scandal however noted that, “These facts could constitute a violation of paragraphs 1 and 2 of article 13 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code”.
FIFA were clear in saying that it stands against discrimination of all kinds and that it punishes those who “Undermine the dignity or integrity of a person because of his sex by a suspension lasting at least ten matches, or any other appropriate disciplinary measure”.
Whatever the world body decides, it will not rule on the scrutiny-facing Rubiales’ employment with the country’s FA as it is up to the Football Association in Spain to act on whether he is fit for his role or not following his uncanny behaviour.
The Spanish FA will have a meeting on August 25 where Mr. Rubiales’ employment with the organisation will be discussed.
