Israel confirms Gaza chief doctor is in military prison

An Israeli rights group has said Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital who disappeared two weeks ago after being taken by Israeli troops is being held in an Israeli military prison, within the occupied West Bank, Asharq Al-Awsat reported on January 13th.

According to Physicians for Human Rights-Israel (PHRI), the Israeli military confirmed over email that Abu Safiya is staying in Ofer Prison. Ran Yaron, a spokesman for PHRI, told the Associated Press that a lawyer of Abu Safiya’s family was told he is not permitted to see the director until January 29th.

The military has previously refused to comment when AP asked about Abu Safiya’s whereabouts.
