James Gray Honored at Marrakech Film Festival 2023
(Marrakech) The great American filmmaker James Gray on Saturday said he was “very honoured” by the tribute paid to him at the Marrakech International Film Festival, expressing his great joy to find the Ochre city which occupies a “special” place with him.
“It is a great honour for me to be here in Marrakech. I am also very honoured and touched by the tribute paid to me by the Marrakech International Film Festival. It means that my work for many years has paid off,” Gray told M24, MAP’s 24-hour news channel.
“I have worked for 25 years to get to this point (…) and to be here today is just wonderful,” he said, saying he “feels like it’s a gift to be in Marrakech today, given the difficult circumstances and the delicate pandemic context that everyone has experienced.
Referring to Marrakech, the great American writer, director and producer explained that this city has a special place for him and his family. “My children and my wife are very disappointed that they couldn’t come with me this time. They really love Morocco and love Marrakech especially.”
Gray then recalled the rich and beautiful experience he had in 2018, when he was president of the Jury of the 17th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival, describing it as “fantastic”. “When I was president of the Jury in 2018, I watched many films. Each of these cinematic works had something very beautiful and special.”
Asked about the future of the 7th art, Gray felt that one of the most striking changes is that “it has become easier, in some ways, to make a movie,” but the problem remains managing distribution and keeping theaters open.
“If we’re talking about the idea of a cinema that includes streaming, which allows you to stay home and watch any film production, I think the future is incredible,” he argued.
