Guinea: new hope for elections with new electoral body

Guinea’s military junta, which has been ruling since September 2021, has created The Directorate General of Elections (DGE), an institution to organize and manage elections, including a constitutional referendum in September and general and presidential elections in December according to the Associated Press on June 15th.
The ruling junta’s leader, General Mamadi Doumbouya, agreed in 2022 to launch a transition to democratic civilian rule by the end of 2024, and when the deadline came and went with no elections, protests from the opposition overtook the capital city of Conakry in January this year.
Doumbouya announced in a decree on June 14th that the DGE will be responsible also for electoral fairness, and the two heads of the institution will be appointed via a presidential decree. The DGE will represent Guinea in subregional, regional, and international electoral bodies.
