The Sudan war has displaced over 16,000 people in a week

The Sudan war has displaced more than 16,000 people over the course of a week due to escalating violence in numerous areas, according to the United Nations’ migration agency via The New Arab on June 19th.
Fighting in the west and south of Sudan has intensified between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces over the past few weeks.
After losing control of the capital city of Khartoum in March 2025, the RSF has tried to compensate for this major strategic loss by seeking to win territory in the country’s more remote regions, cutting off military supply lines and bolstering its own.
The UN’s International Organisation for Migration stated that almost 11,000 people were displaced from 10 villages in Al Quoz in South Kordofan between 12th and 14th June due to “increased insecurity.”
Al Quoz is situated just south of El-Obeid, a major town controlled by the military. Al Quoz is also the only crossroads between Khartoum and the Western Darfur region, which is almost entirely controlled by the RSF.
The International Organisation for Migration also documented the displacement of 4,278 people between the 15th and 17th June due to violent clashes between the military and paramilitaries. This occurred in the northern gateway to Darfur, which is situated in the border area between Sudan, Libya, and Egypt.
The RSF took control of the strategic border area of Al-Muthallath on June 15th following a military retreat.
The 700 kilometres (430 miles) of land that separates the border from El-Fasher, which is the North Darfur state capital and the only major Darfur town the RSF has not conquered, is a vital strategic desert supply route for fuel, munitions, and personnel.
El-Fasher has been besieged for over a year by the RSF, who have frequently attacked the town and the surrounding famine-stricken camps.
According to the International Organisation for Migration, around 1,000 people were displaced from El-Fasher and the Abu Shouk displacement camp between 10th and 11th June.
Over 10 million people have been internally displaced by the Sudan war in a huge humanitarian disaster, making the country home to the world’s largest displacement crisis.
Another four million people have fled across the border into neighbouring countries since the war began in April 2023.
