Syria: 16.3 million at risk of food insecurity in 2025

Roughly 16.3 million people in Syria are in danger of facing food insecurity in 2025, as wheat harvests are decreasing due to severe drought, Al-Monitor via AFP reported on June 26th.
According to Haya Abu Assaf, who is the assistant to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) representative in Syria, the nation is facing its worst climate situation in six decades.
Assaf said a drop of “2.5 to 2.7 million tonnes in the wheat crop” is anticipated, in which the amount of wheat will not be enough for local communities. Before the Syrian civil-war started in 2011, the country was making an average of 4.1 million tonnes of wheat, per year.
