Gold Mine collapses in eastern Sudan, killing 11 workers

A gold mine in eastern Sudan has partially collapsed, killing 11 miners according to the state-run company overseeing the project via Asharq Al-Aswat on June 29th.
The Kersh al-Feel mine, located in the desert town of Houeid in the eastern Nile River province, collapsed between June 28th – 29th. The Sudanese Mineral Resources Limited Company revealed that another seven workers were injured in the incident, and that they have been transferred to a hospital.
The company announced that it had halted excavation and reiterated its warning to informal miners not to work at the site. Despite being a major gold producing country, Sudan’s mines collapse frequently due to poor safety regulations. Similar incidents in recent years include a 2023 collapse that killed 14 miners and another that killed 38 in 2021.
