Morocco reopened its embassy in Syria’s capital Damascus, resuming all services interrupted by over a decade of war, the government-friendly The North Africa Post reported on July 9th.

This news follows the Syrian president Ahmed Al-Sharaa’s visit to Morocco, as reported by Maghrebi on June 30th. As Yabiladi also reported on June 27th during the visit, Al-Sharaa announced Syria’s own intentions to reopen its embassy in Morocco.

On May 17th during the 34th Arab Summit held in Baghdad, King Mohammed VI of Morocco announced his country’s intention to reopen the embassy in Damascus. The embassy, which closed in 2012, has opened, but administrative procedures and rehabilitation works are being carried out to transfer it to a new HQ.

King Mohammed offered a positive view on the diplomatic prospects between the two nations. The King reaffirmed Morocco’s steadfast position on Syria, which was expressed in his letter to President Al-Sharaa. Wherein, his Kingdom’s support for the Syrian people’s struggle for liberty, security, and stability were conveyed. The letter also expressed Moroccan support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. On June 21st, Maghrebi reported on Israeli incursions into Syrian territory.

The Syrian Foreign Minister Assaad Al-Chaibani offered his nation’s gratitude to the King for his decision to reopen an embassy in Morocco. Syria’s government has been on a diplomatic hot-streak, most recently reestablishing ties with the UK, and shaking off UK and US sanctions, as Maghrebi reported on July 8th.

As Morocco and Syria take concrete steps to reestablish cooperation, Morocco continues to emerge as a dependable partner in the region, a potentially valuable asset in a time of uncertainty for international relationships.
