Algeria and South Africa have taken a significant step in South-South collaboration by signing new agreements to boost their academic and scientific partnership, the IAfrica.com reported on July 18th. This expanded alliance is expected to advance human capital development, knowledge exchange, technology transfer, and shared research infrastructure across multiple disciplines.

These accords were finalised during the visit of South Africa’s Higher Education Minister, Prof. Blade Nzimande, to Algeria, aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties and fostering a dynamic scientific ecosystem driven by African priorities.

During his trip, Minister Nzimande, accompanied by a high-ranking delegation, toured the University of Saad Dahleb Blida 1, including its aeronautical engineering technology facilities, and met with Algerian researchers based in South Africa. The visit emphasised the importance of academic mobility and practical research as key drivers for Africa-led innovation and sustainable development.

In Algiers, Nzimande held discussions with Algerian Higher Education Minister Prof. Kamel Baddari, culminating in the signing of a collaborative work plan for 2026 to 2028. The agreement outlines joint research initiatives, the establishment of innovation hubs, and programs encouraging exchange between universities and research centres across both nations.

Acknowledging Algeria’s support during South Africa’s anti-apartheid era, Nzimande stated the partnership is “a reflection of a shared pan-African vision rooted in sovereignty, peace, and mutual respect.” Minister Baddari highlighted that the collaboration seeks to make both countries leaders in fields like artificial intelligence, nanoscience, and advanced technologies, aiming to build a continental knowledge and innovation hub capable of global competition.

After signing a deal with Tunisia on April 13th, this partnership represents an important step in changing the landscape of scientific research in Algeria and strengthening cooperation between two of the continent’s largest economies, opening new opportunities for technological progress and long-term educational transformation throughout Africa.
