Iraq gives life sentence under law banning Israeli normalisation

Iraq has given its first life sentence under a law which makes normalisation with Israel illegal, the judiciary said on July 23rd, according to The New Arab.

Baghdad’s Karkh Criminal Court handed a life sentence to a man for promoting what was described as the “Zionist entity.” The Supreme Judicial Council said the man posted videos and images on Facebook which promote the normalisation of relations with Israel.

Hebrew books and newspapers were found in his home by authorities. The ruling was made under Article 7 of the 2022 Anti-Normalisation Law No. 1.
