Egypt’s president pardons and releases over a thousand prisoners

Egypt’s Interior Ministry announced on July 23rd the release of 1,056 prisoners by way of presidential pardon, according to Middle East Monitor on July 25th.

The ministry stated that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi decided to pardon prisoners who met the conditions necessary for an early release. The decision was made on the anniversary of the 23 July 1952 Revolution, which overthrew the Egyptian monarchy.

The statement added that the inmates, imprisoned across the country, had their files examined by review committees who concluded that they met the criteria to qualify for early release under the pardon. The statement did not reveal any further details on the conditions for eligibility.
