Report alleges Algeria–Polisario coordination

A Morocco-aligned news outlet has accused the Algerian government and the Polisario Front of engaging in activities intended to boost the separatist movement in Western Sahara amid what it describes as diplomatic setbacks. The report was published by The North Africa Post on August 14th.
According to the outlet, Algeria’s government has been accused of being “corrupt” and of misleading the Polisario Front for decades. The article claims that both parties have failed to accept what it calls the “failure” of the separatist movement in the region.
The outlet reported that the United Nations is expected to endorse Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara this year, describing it as the only realistic solution. It also stated that the United States Congress is considering legislation that may label the Polisario Front as a terrorist organisation, which could lead to economic and political sanctions for the group’s supporters.
In France, some Algerian diplomats have reportedly been the subject of arrest warrants in connection with the alleged attempted kidnappings of Algerian dissidents. The outlet links these allegations to Algeria’s diplomatic tensions over Western Sahara.
The article further stated that Algerian authorities have facilitated the participation of Polisario representatives at international events without invitations and with the aim of deflecting public attention from deepening political, social and economic crises. It cited a recent meeting of African political parties in Accra, Ghana, where a Polisario representative is accused of attending as part of the Algerian delegation.
According to the outlet, a similar incident occurred in 2024, when a Polisario member gained access to the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) with Algerian assistance. Japanese authorities reportedly confirmed they had not invited the individual and reaffirmed their support for Morocco. The outlet claimed another attempt at gaining entry is planned for TICAD 2025.
The North Africa Post also reported that in July 2024, the African Union Executive Committee excluded the Polisario Front from participating in international meetings, and that several influential countries worldwide have rejected the group’s participation in summits involving African leaders.
The article noted Morocco’s efforts to develop Western Sahara as a regional trade hub linking West Africa to global markets and stated that the country’s allies have expressed their support.
