Israel blocks UN Investigation into sex crimes allegations
Israel is blocking a UN investigation into accusations of sex crimes committed during the Hamas-led attacks of October 7th, Middle East Eye via Haaretz reported on January 8th.
Haaretz reported that officials are against an investigation as it would also examine accusations of sex crimes against Palestinians by Israelis.
The UN under secretary-general for sexual violence in conflict, Pramila Patten, asked that Israeli detention centres are investigated as a condition for the inquiry into the allegations of sex crimes on October 7th 2023.
Patten’s request has been rejected by Israel, but it would have enabled the UN to access Israel’s prisons to carry out investigations into how Palestinians were treated there.
