Body of soldier held in Gaza since 2014 retrieved by Israel

According to the Israeli military, the country’s special forces have retrieved the body of a soldier killed in 2014 during the Gaza war, who was kept as a hostage by Hamas since that time, The BBC reported on January 19th.

The remains of Staff Sgt Oron Shaul’s were found as a result of a “covert, special operation” led by the Israeli military Shin Bet security service in Gaza, a statement said.

Shaul’s family were informed after an indentification process conducted by the National Institute of Forensic Medicine and the Military Rabbinate, the statement added.

The operation to bring the body of Shaul home to be buried, was carried out by special units of the IDF’s Military Intelligence Directorate, as well as the Shayetet 13 marine commando unit and Shin Bet operatives, according to Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesman, Rear Adm Daniel Hagari.
