UN considers renewal of peacekeeping force in Lebanon

The United Nations Security Council started debating a resolution drafted by France to extend the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon’s south for 12 months, according to Middle East Eye via Reuters on August 19th.

The drafted text would “extend the mandate of Unifil until 31 August 2026” but “indicates its intention to work on a withdrawal of Unifil.”

Israel and the US have purportedly resisted the mandate’s renewal, and it is not clear whether the text has support from Washington. The US holds veto power over the Council.
