Israel’s call for a demilitarised south sparks protests in Syria

Syrians have protested in the south of Syria over Israel’s widened operation in the country and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments that Syria’s armed forces cannot move south of Damascus, The Middle East Eye via Reuters reported on February 24th.

Netanyahu said during an address on February 23rd that he would not permit the forces of Syria’s new rulers, to “enter the area south of Damascus.”

“Take note: We will not allow HTS forces or the new Syrian army to enter the area south of Damascus,” Netanyahu said, in reference to the new government in Syria and the key former rebel group, Tahrir al-Sham.
