UN peacekeepers to leave Lebanon in 2027

The UN peacekeeping mission will leave Lebanon in 2027, following a UN Security Council vote on August 28th, which has enabled one last extension following pressure to conclude the decades-old force, according to Al-Monitor via AFP.
Israel commended the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon’s (UNIFIL) termination and called on Lebanon’s government to exert its power after Israel’s military operations have weakened Hezbollah.
While the US holds veto power, the council voted without internal opposition for a resolution which will extend the mandate of UNIFIL for the last time.
