Widespread repression across Libya fuels UN concerns
Share

Both rival governments in Libya have embarked on a policy of repression amid militia violence and political discontent as reported by Maghrebi Week on September 1st.

Instability in the country due to these split governments has produced a volatile political atmosphere, which has escalated into authoritarian activity from both governments, imprisoning political dissidents and clamping down on freedom of expression.

An absence of coherent judicial and democratic reform has facilitated this political exploitation from both governments, and the influence of militia groups affiliated with these administrations has perpetuated violence in the country. The UN are hoping their political roadmap will help to unify Libya’s political institutions.
