Libya: ending enforced disappearances is crucial step, says UN

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya has called for enforced disappearances in Libya to come to an end, in a statement marking August 30th’s International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, as reported in Maghrebi Weekly on September 8th.
Libya has seen a disturbing rise in systemic disappearances that have a range of targets including political figures, opposition members, journalists, human rights defenders, activists, and ordinary citizens.
UNSMIL stressed that disclosing the fates of victims is essential to bring about reconciliation and political stability in Libya, as is reparations and compensation for victims and their families.
