Algeria calls for emergency UN meeting following Israeli attack

Algeria, working in coordination with Qatar, has called for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council to address the fallout from an Israeli strike in Doha, AL24 News via Reuters reported on September 10th.
The strike, which took place as Hamas officials were meeting in the Qatari capital to discuss a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal for Gaza, killed the son of senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya. The attack has not only shaken Qatar, a key mediator in negotiations alongside Egypt and the United States, but also cast doubt on the already fragile prospects of a truce in Gaza.
Qatar denounced the assault as a blatant violation of its sovereignty and international law, while Algeria moved swiftly to demand that the Security Council convene on September 10th to discuss the situation in the Middle East.
Germany also expressed strong condemnation of the attack, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz calling the strike “unacceptable”, while US President Donald Trump, called the strike counterproductive, arguing it did not advance either Israeli or American goals.
Algeria’s call for an emergency session comes as regional mediation efforts were already unravelling. In April, Qatar publicly expressed frustration with the lack of progress in Gaza peace talks.
But Israel ultimately made clear its intention is to ignore the Egypt–Qatar ceasefire plan, amounting to a serious blow to the latest coordinated initiative aimed at halting the bloodshed.
The Israeli attack on Doha follows a previous suspected drone strike that hit one of the boats taking part in a Gaza aid flotilla, aiming to break the siege on the enclave and deliver humanitarian aid to the people currently living under dire conditions. The incident had been reported by the crew members 50 miles from Tunisia’s port Sidi Bou Said.
