Egypt proposes plan for Gaza’s reconstruction
Egypt’s foreign ministry announced on February 11th that the country plans to present a detailed plan for Gaza’s reconstruction that would ensure Palestinians stay on their land, according to The New Arab.
“The Arab Republic of Egypt expresses its aspiration to cooperate with the US administration led by President Donald Trump to achieve a comprehensive and just peace in the region, by reaching a just settlement of the Palestinian issue that takes into account the rights of the people of the region,” the statement from Egypt’s foreign ministry read.
Egypt’s plan involves ‘implementing the two state-solution’, a move considered the “only way to achieve stability and coexistence among people in the region.”
Egypt’s foreign ministry also announced last week that the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will host an emergency meeting after the Arab Summit which is due to take place on February 27th in Cairo, according to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.
US President Donald Trump invited Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to the White House on February 1st, the Egyptian presidency said. However, a US official confirmed that no date had been specified for the visit, and both the Egyptian presidency and foreign ministry are yet to comment further regarding the visit.
Sisi was reportedly to visit the White House on February 18th, however the date is now delayed until further notice due to Cairo’s opposition to Trump’s plan.
Sisi is postponing his visit to the White House for talks if Trump’s plan to displace Palestinians from Gaza is on the agenda, two Egyptian security sources said, Reuters has reported.
Senior Egyptian officials have recently described Egypt’s relations with Washington as their most tense in thirty years, following what they said was intense backlash from the Trump administration to Egypt’s concerns surrounding the proposal, which includes forcibly displacing the Palestinian population.
