Activist Alaa Abdel Fattah reunited with family after prison release

Alaa Abdel Fattah, the British-Egyptian activist jailed for six years in Egypt, has just reunited with his family after being pardoned by President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi on September 22nd, according to the BBC.
Abdel Fattah was imprisoned in 2021, with allegations of “spreading false news”. In March 2025, the activist was still detained —despite having served his full sentence—, prompting MP Freddy al-Baiady to submit an enquiry about his continued detention.
The pardon was granted following the urges for Fattah’s release by the UK government and an extreme hunger strike by his mother, Laila Soueif, who reunited with her son at home on Tuesday, September 23rd.
