Morocco sets its focus on development projects to the UN amid rising climate issues.

According to Yabiladi on September 24th, Morocco’s Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, represented the kingdom at the most recent UN General Assembly on September 23rd. He reportedly revealed Morocco’s intention of carrying out major development projects under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.

Akhannouch particularly highlighted Rabat’s pivot toward more renewable forms of energy, claiming the kingdom is in a better position to address climate-linked issues within its own country and climate change in general.

The Head of Government also apparently emphasised the importance of collective action in the global fight against climate change. He stated these issues threaten international peace and security and can only be solved through working together in pursuit of goals that benefit humanity.

Akhannouch explained that Morocco’s struggle with climate change, paired with population growth, has caused significant water stress in the country. He then described how Morocco plans to mitigate the issue through innovative policies. These policies apparently include water transfers between hydrographic basins, wastewater reuse, seawater desalination, the promotion of efficient agricultural irrigation systems, and the construction of dams.

Technology was also a talking point for Morocco’s representative; he reportedly mentioned the kingdom’s intention of adapting to advances in technology through the Morocco Digital 2030 strategy, a policy apparently designed to accelerate the process of the country’s digital transformation.

He also mentioned AI’s role in their aims of development, stating it can create a large increase in opportunities across sectors such as education and agriculture, but mustn’t be a source of exclusion or division, instead be used for shared progress.

Morocco’s climate issues have been taking a toll on many of the sectors Akhannouch mentioned in his address to the UN. According to Maghrebi, due to drought, Morocco’s livestock numbers have dropped around 38%. The agriculture-reliant country has in some cases been forced to outsource agriculture, taking a negative effective on the labour force.

Consequently, the economy has faced issues, evident by the rising trade deficit which is predicted to reach 20% by 2026.
