Algeria’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf has reportedly expressed his nation’s full endorsement of achieving a fair and sustainable solution, which maintains the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, as covered by Maghrebi Week on September 22nd.

Attaf stressed that all resolutions must follow the guidance of the United Nations and prompt “direct and unconditional negotiations” between the Polisario Front and Morocco.

Observers note that Algeria’s position is reflective of regional tensions, with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, defining Algeria and Morocco as being they key actors of the Western Sahara conflict.
