US: Trump unveils plan to end Gaza war at White House

US president Donald Trump unveiled a plan to put an immediate end to the ongoing genocide and war in Gaza, calling for eternal peace in the Middle East, The National via Reuters reported on September 29th.

The White House released the 20-point detailed plan which envisages the redevelopment of the Palestinian territory, and it becoming “a de-radicalised terror-free zone”, ultimately reconstructing the enclave, reportedly, for the benefit of its population.

If the plan is accepted by Israel and Hamas it will reportedly put a swift end to the war, and the hostages would be freed within 72 hours.

An official from Hamas said that the group is reviewing the plan. He also reaffirmed that they will not give up on previous non-negotiable principles.

The plan would ultimately destroy Hamas’ standing in Gaza, as it details that the group cannot have any role in governance and that their military infrastructure would be dismantled. On September 12th, nations voted along these lines at the UN General Assembly, as they called for a Hamas-free Palestine.

Trump later added that this would finally bring an end to the death and destruction that the region has been struck by for so many years, and decades. The president has been a key figure in the ceasefire talks due to his close relationship with Netanyahu.

Netanyahu visited the White House a number of times since Trump’s return in the Oval Office, as the US president has been seemingly committed to putting an end to the war, although his previous plans were considered shameful as both Israel and Trump called for the displacement of Gazan Palestinians.

Another key point of the proposal is a temporary International Stabilisation Force that will be developed by the US, and Arab and international partners. This proposed force would serve as a “long-term internal security solution” by training and providing support to Palestinian police forces.

A governing body was suggested in the plan to rule over the territory. It is said to be a technocratic, apolitical Palestinian committee made of Palestinians and international experts. However, this governing body won’t be independent as the Board of Peace, an international interim body, will oversee and supervise it with Trump and former UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair.

In an unexpected turn of events, the Israeli Prime Minister apologised to the Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, as a trilateral telephone conversation was held alongside Trump. Netanyahu said that he regrets infringing upon the country’s sovereignty on September 9th and the death of the Qatari man.

The strike targeted Hamas officials in Doha, and it killed five of them while also taking the life of a Qatari security officer. The Doha Summit with Arab nations was held to discuss the assault and to organise tougher collective measures. However not much has followed from the summit.

Far-right Israeli politicians close to Netanyahu, who have previously reaffirmed their ambitions to continue the war on Gaza, condemned his public apology to the Qatari Prime Minister.

While the situation in Gaza worsens daily, Israel has continued its military operations on the territory and while many ceasefire deals have been proposed, the country rejected and violated multiples of them. However, if Hamas agrees to the 20-point plan, it will hopefully put an end to the genocide and conflict that’s been ongoing for almost two years now.
