The Algerian army was responsible for killing six people near to the Tunisian border on 24th September, as reported by Maghrebi Week.

Algeria’s defence ministry claims the killings were carried out as part of a series of wider raids that were aimed at tackling “terrorism” in the desolate Eastern mountain regions of the country. Armed Islamic extremist groups have been active in the country since 2002, following the country’s civil war commonly referred to as the “Black Decade”.

The defence ministry stated that the six people killed near the Tunisian border were related to these Islamic extremist groups, having been armed with Kalashnikov machine guns.
