Tunisian men pushing women towards suicide, ‘femicides’ up
Is Tunisia becoming the new female suicide leader in the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU)? According to a recent report ‘femicides’ are up in this tiny North African country, which once had the lowest suicide rates in the region.
Coordinator of the UGTT Active Woman National Office Zoubeida Nakibaid told a Tunisian website on November 25th that femicides have become more frequent in Tunisia.
“A woman dies every week or every ten days under the hands of a man. Generally, it is the husband, the ex-husband, the father, and sometimes even the son, for essentially economic reasons, “she said condemning the violence against women.
On the last World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10, the World Health Organization (WHO) published a world suicide report which placed Tunisia quite low in the ranking, but Morocco at the top for the AMU.
According to the report’s interactive world map, Morocco shows 3.6 female suicide deaths per 100,000 people. The kingdom has the highest female suicide rate in North Africa.
In 2016, Morocco recorded 1,014 suicides, of which 613 are women.
