The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) former President, Joseph Kabila, has been handed the death penalty after a months-long court investigation found he had committed war crimes and treason by colluding with M23 rebels, among other crimes, the AP reported on September 30.

A high military court issued the death sentence in absentia, with Kabila’s last sighting being in Goma city in the country’s North Kivu Province in the East M23 rebel-controlled territory.

Kabila has been ordered by the court to pay $29 billion in damages to the country, with $2 billion each for North and South Kivu provinces.
