Former Egyptian minister nominated as UNESCO director

On October 6, former Egyptian tourism and antiquities minister, Khaled el-Anani, was nominated as the new director for UNESCO – the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation -, Associated Press reported.
The nomination of the first director from the Arab world comes after the Trump administration decided to pull the United States out of the organisation, signalling future budget cuts.
El-Anani won a vote on October 6 against Firmin Edouard Matoko, an economist from the Republic of Congo, and the decision is expected to be finalised at a meeting of UNESCO’s general assembly in Uzbekistan in November 2025.
